They are definitely a good car, but also very much a small car. You asked about it being a family car and it is a bit small for that. The handling is crisp and the ride a little firm. Its twin, the Pontiac Vibe comes off the same assembly line and can oftentimes be bought for less money. They share a platform and engine with the Toyota Corolla but don't get as good mileage because the Matrix/Vibes are less aerodynamic. If you need a little larger car for a family, the Toyota Camry's are a good bet. They are priced higher, but not too badly if you get one with the base 4 cylinder engine and not too loaded with options. Shop several dealers for price as all dealers are willing to deal right now. Use an online pricing service to find the dealers cost and don't pay much over that amount, because dealers also get a volume rebate that is not disclosed.
