It is not the same engine actually. The engines have the same displacement, but the Mechanicals are quite a bit different. The GT model engine is the usual VVTi setup for Toyota which stands for "Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence". What this means is that the timing for the intake valves on the cylinders modify the time when they open and close depending on load, rpm's and engine temperature to optimize MPG, HP and Torque.
The GTs model has an engine that has VVTLi which stands for "Variable Valve Timing and Lift with Intelligence. In this engine, in addition to the change in intake valve timing, the amount of "lift" or the amount of room the valve moves into the cylinder also changes above a certain RPM level. So what you see with this engine is that the torque (amount of twisting force) which you feel getting moving initially in most cases is the same as the regular GT engine, but the HP is ALOT more, so it can do more work at higher RPM's.
If you have the GTs model it also came with the 6-speed manual rather than the 5-speed manual if you have a manual transmission.
Hope this helps.
