Depends on the weight of the car and trailer and most important is the axle ratio of the tow vehicle.

I have carried a 1,200 lb pop up camper with a 5,000 lb RV trailer with my 1995 Tacoma V6. Mine is a manual 5 speed and I had to go into third gear on hills pulling that much weight, but I did it. It didn't hurt the truck at all. It now has 255,000 miles on it.
