As the owner of an FJ Cruiser, I would recommend it, but it will depend upon what your needs are.
If you are just looking for something dependable and 4WD, you can go either way. If you need to haul a lot of equipment or building materials, then you need the Tacoma. If it's people that you want to haul around, the FJ Cruiser is a better option.
There are some things, however, that you need to know about the FJ Cruiser.
If you are tall and need the seat pushed all the way back, you will have a hard time seeing stoplights overhead. You have to "duck" down to see them out of the windshield.
The FJ Cruiser has HUGE blindspots on either side thanks to the lack of window glass. You will need to learn to rely solely on your mirrors.
There is very little legroom in the back seat, and it is not comfortable for longer drives unless the passengers back there are children.
The gas mileage on the FJ Cruiser just plain sucks! I get about 8 mpg in the city, and jump for joy if I can get more than 17 on the highway. As you're in Hawaii, I don't think you will have to worry about winter formulated gasoline, which reduces mpg by 3 to 5 in both city and highway. (I do admit to having a bit of a lead foot, so that is another factor in my poor mileage.)
Overall, though, I love my FJ and consider it to be the second best vehicle I have ever owned (behind my Cadillac DTS).
