You didnt mention how many miles were on the truck. They had one relatively minor issue with the shift tower bushings that could be your problem and not a major overhaul! Inside the pivot point on the shifter handle is a rubberized bushing that cups the ball of the shifter. At higher miles this bushing will wear and crumble, creating 1/4 inch of play at a critical point; ie the selector doesnt fully go into gear causing it to pop out. It is worth the time to remove the console and the shift tower(some had 4 10mm bolts--others had a lock ring that pushes down and turns left to release). If you dont see the green colored bushing or it is crumbled, it needs replacement along with the plastic one on the end. Good Luck--T&T
