Default 2001 Camry, timing belt or not?

GF looking to buy a 2001 Camry, 4cyl w/75k miles, the seller contends that this, 5th generation Camry does NOT require a timing belt replaced at 90k miles, only drive belt replacement, that, in fact this model uses a metal chain which should outlast the life of the engine itself....truth or BS?

if the belt is replaced when its needed it shouldn't be an issue. if it does break and its an interference engine the results will not be pretty!!

Actually ,you have a belt like the others said but the 5SFE 2.2 liter engine in the 2001 is non-interference. If the timing belt breaks, it won't cause any damage, contrary to what the last answer said. If the car is the redesigned 2002, it has a maintenance-free timing chain that doesn't need replacement. Beware of buyer. If it is a 2001, he is either a liar or he knows nothing about the car- meaning he may have neglected other things too. If her heart is set on this car make sure that the seller has all the service records.
