The Toyota Prius hybrid is about the best, with results up into the 45+ mpg and above.
But for normal cars, it's hard to beat the toyota Corolla, which new modern cars are getting 35+ mpg and above on highways. That's pretty darn good, especially with an automatic transmission which gets just a couple MPG less than manual transmission which usually is a 5-spd tranny.
I've got a 1991 Corolla which has over 246K miles on it, and I've babied it for years, and it can average 30 mpg in town, and last tank of gas I managed 36 mpg in town, with auto tranny, but that's extremely rare for me. I've gotten that much on flat highway before, but I think it was just a fluke for that extremely great mileage. As I said, that old a car, with such high mileage, I can still get 30 mpg in town.
But the Prius is the best Toyota around for highest MPG.
