Depends on the engine, the newer 4cyl. VVT-i engines use a chain.































You can tell by looking at the timing cover.















If the cover is plastic it has a belt.















If the cover is metal it has a chain.

i think it depends on the model. there are various toyota engines using VVTi technology. some even dual VVTi.

Because the VVT-i unit is controlled by oil pressure and solenoids, they are a chain engine. This is good economy wise because the timing varies with the changing operating conditions. Less maintenance because the belt does not need changing, but care must be followed to change the oil at the recommended intervals. T&T
