Toyota's and their MPG?

Why did Toyota lie about the amount of MPG their cars get, and why wasn't a bid deal made out of the fact that they lied?

I dont think Toyota lied about their MPG. MPG varies due to conditions such as the way the driver drives, where that person drives, on the road or highway and much more. All car makers give 2 MPG city and highway because most people do drive both and due to that there is a mixture from the highest MPG to the lowest. On average most cars get between the numbers. A lot of conditions plays a role in how much MPG a car can get.

I used to own a 1999 Toyota Corolla LE automatic and I regularly got 40 mpg on the highway on out of town trips. Toyota claim 37 on the highway back then. I have two Previas ( a 1992 and 1994) that Toyota claims get 22 mpg highway and I get between 23-25 mpg in either van on the highway. From my experience, Toyota's "lie" actually was beneficial and I got better mpgs than they claimed. Is there a problem?

No car manufacturers determine their own fuel mileage ratings, they are set by the government. The tests they used before used to be way too high but a couple of years ago the tests were revised and are now pretty accurate. My 2008 Corolla is rated at 37 mpg highway. I drive like the Devil himself was after me and I still get 35. If I drive more "normally" I can beat 37 easily so the rating seems pretty good. What car(s) do you feel have been misrepresented?

If you don't like the MPG ratings, you don't complain to Toyota. You complain to the EPA.

All car manufacturers, including Toyota, are only allowed to use official MPG figures determined by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Toyota doesn't determine the MPG numbers for their cars. The EPA does.
