Centre line speedometers have been around since speedometers have been fitted to cars there have even been some sports cars built with the speedo on the passenger side and a rev counter in front of the driver.
This centre line layout was used on the Morris Minor from 1949 on, the Austin and Morris Mini from 1959 on, in recent years particularly with the advent of digital speedo's it has become popular again.
