The odometer allows you to track two different trips for mileage. For example you might want to track your overall trip mileage for your summer vacation, but still want to use the odometer to follow someone's directions to a specific location. With only one trip meter you would have to write down the value at that point, reset it to zero for your short trip, reset it again, and then remember to add it all up later on.
