ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS have it checked by a Mechanic before you buy.
It sounds legit, ask him if he's got the Recpiets for all the work that he had done just to make sure.
But taking it to an independant mechanic is the best move. They get paid, they aren't emotionally invested in it like you are. They can be completely objective. They will also be able to run tests (compression test, etc.) that might be a little hard for you to do.
They will be honest with you about what's wrong with it, because they already got paid. So they have no reason to lie so you buy the Car.
