The easiest reason that your Toyota is going bad is because it is not an American car.

could be bad spark plugs which its better if you do a full tune up.i had this problem with my 1995 toyota camry and i changed the spark plugs and wires

The EGR valves are pretty popular about going bad on that body style. Can't be 100% positive, but it would be a likely suspect. Also, the engine coolant temp sensors go bad. It all depends on when the shutting off happens and how often. Good luck
