You will get all types of problems from trying to turn your wheel when having a leak from the power steering boot. You should get that repaired ASAP, it's extremely dangerous to be driving like that.

First the leak should be located .















At 60k miles only guess on a hose leak at its end.















If you drive with a dry pump it will seize.

Keep an eye on your fluid. A small leak isn't going to kill your car's power steering, but running it without fluid will. Keep checking the fluid and filling as needed until you can get it fixed. The grinding noise will probably go away once you have put the right amount of fluid back in.
