Engine braking on 2010 Corolla (3-shifting position).















Will it affect my new car at all if I drove the first 100 miles within a month using 3 instead of D by accident? (Both are in the same row.) I did not notice any difference in driving with either. Also, what exactly is engine braking and what does it do to the car?

It shouldn't hurt the car, but it'll kill your mileage.















You simply didn't use overdrive.

Engine braking is using the engine to slow the car down instead of entirely the brakes. Basically, if you are in a higher gear at a lower rpm, and you shift down, then the rpm's will rise, and you will feel the engine kind of slow the car down. I wouldn't recommend using the engine to slow the car down, that's kinda what the brakes are for.

Putting the car in 3 doesn't use engine braking at all.































Anything below D in an automatic car is the highest gear that the automatic transmission will engage. In 3, the car will select 1st, 2nd and 3rd but not 4th or 5th inside the box.































Engine braking is the process of using successively lower gears to bring the car's speed lower. To be perfectly honest, it isn't exactly all that effective because unless you know which gear the car is in, simply limiting the ability of the car to shift upwards is irrelevant.

3 is overdrive off















D is over drive on.















Over drive is an extra gear that provides good gas mileage.































You should notice a little more power in 3 on the Highway.















You should feel the car is quieter in the high way in 3.































The proper time to leave the car in "3" is with alot of UP HILL driving.































Engine brake is when you put the car in a lower gear, which forced car to SLOW faster, than if you didn't lower the gear.
