maybe that's why the previous owners dumped it. it's a good rule-of-thumb to take a car in to a mechanic you trust to see if the car is running properly.































It could be a compressor (expensive) or the fan (cheap.) Maybe it's even something stuck in the fan.































Take it to a mechanic.

The ac unit is run off the engine via a drive belt. Watch the ac unit as it fires up, the shudder should be visible. It may indicate a misalignment of the belt or simply a worn belt.

As for your question, I'll hear my fans turn on when the A/C is in use, and I'll feel it, but my car does not shudder violently. If you know anyone else with a Yaris, ask them to turn on their A/C and you can compare yours to theirs.
