Not a good first child's car, especially the GTS model. Believe me I had one. They are 100% a sports car they have a lot a lot of power and extremely high on insurance, especially if you are making payments and need full coverage. If you get a 5 or 6 speed they are really hard to learn on because the gears are very close together and touchy, especially the GTS 6 speed. They also have very poor visibility and are very small so they are also not the safest cars out there. I love these cars, but they are not a child's car or a for a new driver.
Try googling celcia cash test safety and they should come up.
If she were my child, I would wait until she has a few years of driving under her belt, then get her a celica if its still the car she really wants.
