would a 22RE fit in a V6 4runner?

Default would a 22RE fit in a V6 4runner?
I am buying my first car, a 1990 4runner v6. It has 216000 miles on it and I am concerened it could break down knowing the v6's have head gasket problems. Could I get a 22RE into a 4runner set up for a v6 without having to change the tranny and a lot of other things?

pay a1000$ or less for the car drive it till it quits or better yrt get something else
