you might have a broken rocker, or more likely your valve burned through and you have no seal.
I had this happen in my 22r, because the timing was off on a worn chain. You have to check the timing regularly. If your advanced even slightly then your exhaust valves can burn.
You'll have to pull the head.
It's a big job. And while you're at it, you should thoroughly clean the emissions system and replace all the tubes.
If you do this job, take lots of pictures before, and during so you can put it back together right. Get trays and label parts. It will take many many hours.
You'll spend well over 1000 to have this done in a shop.
If you do it yourself you'll probably take 10 hours total, maybe more. And spend 200 on a head gasket, a valve, and some cleaners, hoses, and rust inhibitor. Take your time with the bolts. Its over 20 years old, but it is the best engine ever!
I have a tear down manual I could sell you cheap =)
Expect to have to extract and re-tap a few bolts.
