What are stock gears?

Default What are stock gears?
I always hear of offroad cars that have stock gears. What are they exactly and what is the benefit of getting better ones? I have a 1993 Toyota 4runner sr5 v6 automatic.

stock gears refers to the ring and pinion gears in the axles that came from factory. the benefit of changing the gears is more power, can be used to correct the speedometer when switching to bigger tires. changing the gears also helps in off roading with crawling and climbing obstacles.

4.11 is in the 5 speed models...3.73 is in the automatic models..The 4.11 is better for off roadin,the 3.73 is better for the highway...If you live in the mountains the 4.11 is better...If you live in the valley the 3.73 are better...If you got the 3.73 auto in the mountains you have to be on the gas too much and you get bad gas milage..

The better ones that have a numerically higher ratio 4:30 vs. 3:37 give you better torque multiplication . More Stump pulling power down low. The reason they change these is because when your off road your not going 100mph . You want to match the drive gear with terrain your running across and keep the engine in it's sweet spot ( where it makes the most torque )
