Your 2004 Sienna is not controled by you but by the computer in the car. The gas pedal in that vehicle is called fly-by-wire. This is how it works. When you depress the accelerator pedal an electronic signal is sent to the engines computer, and the engines computer sends a signal to a motor on the side of the throttle body telling it open and let more air into the engine. The computer may not always do what you want it to do to protect the engine and get better gas mileage. It also has alot to do with the software in the vehicles computer.
In a vehicle without the fly-by-wire system your foot on the gas pedal is directly connected to the engine via a mechanical linkage(cable assembly), and you have more control over acceleration. When you press on the gas the vehicle goes no matter what.
