Default 88 toyota rear end going out?

I've been hearing a howling sound recently coming from underneath my truck. I hear it on and off, normally at freeway speeds. A of mine noticed and said he believed my rear end was going out. I dont drive it long distances, and it runs fairly well (no clunking or anything, just noise). The sounds started about a month and a half ago.

Is it the rear end going out?

And if so, how much longer do think it will be before it breaks down?

If you do as Ken suggested and the noise is still there then it could be a Ujoint. I have had different noises come from ujoints; howling, popping, grinding and a whistle. All at different speeds and different ujoint locations. those would be the easier to fix and locate. To check your ujoint jack up the rear of the truck with it out of gear and twist the driveshaft. if there is play in the ujoint, there is your noise. 14 dollar replacement part.
