Default What's your opinion on Toyota's 22R?
Durability, potential in performance, likes and dislikes. Any opinion is welcome.

the 22r engine is a very strong old style engine a member of the r series of motors over square type it cane in carby and efi both are great also had a turbo kit made to fit bullet proof motor just drive it and enjoy 200 thousand miles plus no prob

The durability of a 22r/re/ret motors is astounding. They will run for over 300k miles. The performance side of the house is also awesome for those engines because they make anything and everything for them. LC Engineering is a toyota site and have a huge selection of upgrades for the motor and crate motors. The strongest engine ever.

Dittos on above. very reliable and long lived. the 22R (R series) was originally designed and built for the Toyota commercial delivery vans for use in the cities of Japan. That is VERY hard service. it was then adapted to the Hilux pick up and ultimately to the Celica. for lighter service in the car and pickup it will last almost forever. it had the highest quality of iron, steel and materials available (rings, pistons, bearings etc.) hence the long life. Hopefully current day replacement parts are of the high quality of the original parts.
