overdrive isn't only for highway driving. you should be using overdrive most of the time. the only time overdrive should be off is when you really need the power like if you were towing something or climbing a steep hill, etc.
overdrive changes the gear ratios so your car will work at a lower rpm.
it should say on the gear shifter how you would know if overdrive is on or off. or there might be a light in the dash that would light up if overdrive is off.
