If you have an automatic tranny, I suggest you change the fluid every 50K or 50,000 miles. Before that is too soon. But some say you can go for up to 100,000 miles, but by that time the oil is getting dirty and that means that the tranny has been running for tens of thousands of miles with worn oil and dirt in it.
It is imporant to use the correct ATF---automatic transmission fluid. Sometimes Toyota has a special kind of tranny fluid, but usually Dexron works okay for any brand except Fords. Ford has always had a different formula of tranny fluid.
It's easy to know when to change the fluid. The tranny fluid is clear, it's clean. If it's cloudy, then should be changed.
