Depending upon where you live, if you're in big cities, there's sometimes regional or area paint shops that do it for only few hundred bucks. I got a quote for my 1991 Geo Prizm (fake corolla) in my town at One Day Paint and Body shop for about $150. But then, my car is kinda trashed on the body anyway, so I wasn't looking for a big deal. But true, most wanted $300 and up JUST for the hood, because it'd involve masking, etc. I didn't think of just taking off the hood (which is incredibly easy) and carrying it in to them, so they wouldn't have to mask it.
But what I ended up doing is going to a junkyard and getting a replacement hood for only $40. Best deal I could get. Just make sure to try and get the exact year, because even tho' diff years look the same, there might be one little difference that makes the replacement hood of a different year not fit exactly correctly. (It only cost me $40 because I got it myself at a U-Pull-It-Yourself type junkyard.)
