2002 Toyota Prius will not start?

Brand new battery in it, dash board lit up, but will not turn over. Can not jump start it at all. Sister just filled it up with gas yesterday.















Don't have the owner's manual, but thanks, and found out it is because my sister in law gave us a duplicate key that is not a transponder key, so we got it figured out. Drove my husband nuts until he figured it out.

I seriously think someone should read the owners manual. This is a hybid vehicle the will run on battery only if it is fully charged. I don't think you could get the gasoline engine to run if the battery is fully charged. It would only kick on if the bettery looses part of the charge of if the driver demands more power than the battery alone can provide.

A Prius doesn't ever "Turn Over" because Prius does not have a 12V starter motor. All the 12V is there for is to boot up the computers which then close the system main relays which are a set of contactors that connect the HV battery to the inverter. The computers then send signals to the inverter which makes MG1 rotate forward and spin the engine up to 1000 RPM. After oil pressure is established the engine computer then starts firing the injectors and igniters which makes the engine run on its own.































If the engine fails to run under its own power within a certain number of seconds for whatever reason (gummed up throttle body, out of fuel, bad fuel pump, etc.) the computers stop spinning it at 1000 RPM and log the DTCs P3101 (engine system malfunction) and either one or both of P3190 and P3191 which are poor engine power output and engine failed to start. When these codes are logged the MIL (check engine) and master warning lights come on.































To power on a 2002 Prius you put your foot firmly on the brake, turn the key to IG-ON (run in an old fashioned car) for a second then turn it to start and hold it there until you hear a beep. After that release the key and the READY light should light up. If either the READY light fails to turn on or the master warning light comes on the car likely has a problem and needs to have the codes read to find out what the problem is.
