I suggest you contact some of the better known engine rebuilders to see if they have info about what motors will swap with little or no modifications; that way you have something to go on, instead of just guessing and having a nightmare project
i suggest you don't. you have one of the best engines on the market and i believe you should stick with it.
i have a 2003 tacoma with the same engine and added a toyota supercharger...it was a very expensive add on (5K) but it has paid for itself at the track. mine is a 4x4 TRD extra cab that is very good in deep sand also with the fat Yokohama meats i have on it.
that will be expensive, if u want a toyota diesel engine u can import it from latin america toyota sells the Hilux down there is their diesel version of the tacoma.
