How's a first generation toyota 4runner run?? Are they good cars?

I want to get a first generation of a toyota 4runner, but i want to know are they good cars for a girl... I like how the top comes off, and it'd be great to take wheeling every once and while... what do you guys think about them??

very good for trail rideing and they run pretty well.

I have a pickup of the same model with over 400k miles on it that gets driven a little over 100 miles a day, with hardly any problems. They are outstanding off road with minimal modification, and nearly impossible to kill if you maintain it well. And the 22R 4 cylinder gets decent gas mileage in the 4x4's, just don't expect to be fast and you will love it. Also, if you plan of any serious wheeling, the 1985 model can be had with a solid front axle (better for off road use) and fuel injection (better off road, better gas mileage, less trouble to start in cold climates and high altitudes), 1985 was the only year you could get both.

All of these answers are right, but to add to it, make sure you know which engine you're getting. While every year 4 Runner was equipped with the bulletproof 22R and fuel injected 22RE 4 cylinder engine, the last two years of the first generation 4 Runner (1988 and 1989) were also offered with an optional V6 engine. Not alot of them will have the V6 but they are out there. 1986 and 1987 4 Runners also could be had with a turbo 22RE called the 22RTE. They are kinda rare so if you find one in great mechanical condition, grab it. These trucks are great. 400,000 miles (like the previous answerer said) is not uncommon. I've seen quite a few of them with over 500,000 miles on them. You'll be hard pressed to find any vehicle that will consistently last that long. BTW, a girl driving one? Now that's just sexy!!
