Default 2001 Toyota Prius, MIL (check engine light) went on. Any ideas what it could be?
I have a 2001 Toyota Prius. I am over 100k and the warranty has expired. Today as I was driving home, the check engine (Malfunction Indicator Light) light came on. The car still drives fine. I am taking it to a mechanic in the morning but I was wondering if there is some malfunction that is common among first generation priuses.

It is one of a hundred problems that all cause the light to come on. Without more information it is impossible to tell.

The thing to do is to get the codes read and post them to the Prius Technical group. However, at 100,000 miles it's likely to be one or more of the following:































Spark plugs (about $12 each)















Clean the throttle body (about $15 from the Toyota parts department)















Clean the MAF sensor (See the instructions at http://www.priuschat.com/)















12V battery is weak.
