Expensive repair quote at Toyota. Where else can I get this fixed and be assured its done right?
I have a 1995 Toyota Tacoma 4 wheel drive PU. I just got a shockingly expensive repair quote at Toyota. The mechanic showed me why my left front wheel vibrates. Apparently, I bent the power steering linkage when I backed into a concrete lamp post footing. Toyota is telling me I have to replace the entire power steering linkage all the way across. $1,800 ;-/
Where else can I go to get this fixed and be assured its done right? Seems to me we have somehow lost the art of craftsmanship and repairing what is broken. The power steering linkage is made of steel. Steel can be re-shaped when heated. My idea is that is the way it can be fixed.
I lost my job, so I have to watch my dollars. I can't give Toyota $1,800 for this repair. Its not going to happen.
Suspension components cannot be repaired because of the liability assosciated with doing that. If a repair shop were to repair a suspension component and later on it snaps where it was repaired causing you to wreck, the shop would be liable for that. That is why no shop will repair a suspension component. It is too much of a liability and safety hazard.
As far as the price goes, if they are replacing the entire rack and pinion assembly that may seem high but the part itself is about $1000. Since most mechanical shops charge around $100 per hour in labor and the job typically calls for 5 hours in labor that brings the total up to about $1500. Now add in power steering fluid and the fact that it needs an alignment and it is not out of the realm of possibility for this job to cost as much as they are quoting you.
anywhere just get the rack from toyota..ive seen it many time the jobber racks will leak,,not might leak,,THEY WILL LEAK,,internal leak ,,waste of ttime and money
