It sounds like your car is an automatic. So, L means first gear (low gear), 2, second gear, 3, third geer which has a direct ratio in relation to the spin of wheel from the engine, and 4 is overdrive, which uses less fuel, for better fuel efficiency.. In most cases, you choose 4-D for general driving, which is the most efficient for your car using all of the gears. If you are driving up a steep hill, it loses the power, because you are in overdrive, you choose 3 to get one gear down for more power to the engine. Assuming that there's an overdrive button on your auto control, you leave it on in most cases and turn it off only when you need to get more power driving uphill.
As a general rule, apply the foot brakes on first, before choosing 4-D. Didn't you learn how to drive at a driving school...?
Hope that helps.
