What does check engine light air duel ratio sensor mean?

I bought my 2K Toyota Camry LE in 07', the check engine light came on approx. 9 months later, why? It has nothing to do with the gas cap. The check engine light code reads p0420. Vehicle has had only 1 owner and never been in an accident. A few months ago I had one oxygen sensor replaced and am thinking of replacing the other? Will this make the check engine light go off.

What is the mileage? The check engine light comes on ever time the odometer reaches a number divisible by 5,000. Did you try to reset it according to the manual? (You hold down the odometer button and turn the key to the first notch; the odometer temporarily reads 0000000.)

P0420 means bad catalytic converter. The O2 sensors ideally should always be replaced in pairs (upstream and downstream at the same time) as the computer compares the signal from the 2 sensors to know whether the cat is working properly or not and only changing one sensor might cause a false positive MIL. I would say replace the other one and see what happens. Also always use OEM sensors with OE style connectors. For example if your car came with a Denso sensor and you use a Bosch as a replacement you can have problems.
