Default toyota tacoma steering rack and pinion problems at 60,000 miles. Why?
I have an '01 tacoma prerunner, 2.7 with 90K miles. At 10K mi. the pump went out and was replaced under warranty. In '04 I bought new tires at 40K mi. since then I have never been able to get vibration and wobble out of the steering. I repeatedly went back to tire people with same complaint(for 4 yrs). Steering is still same. At the last oil change the Toyota people tell me I need new rack and pinion and that the warranty expired in '06. With 4 yrs of oil changes and "quality multi point checks" they never found the rack and pinion problem. Do I have a complaint under the warranty or is it just my loss. I stupidly directed my complaints to the tire people and not the toyota people. Any suggestions out there????

They can't all be perfect. Truth is, there isn't any company that makes every single vehicle without a problem, no matter what logo is on it. The only way the dealer would have known of a steering vibration is if you told them, because those quality inspections are a static event. Driving vibrations are dynamic, and only occur during driving, which is not something a shop would stumble upon. If they didn't fix the problem, then maybe you should take your business elsewhere. Check out the Ford Ranger with a DOHC 143hp 2.3L engine: it's the most fuel efficient compact truck.
