my 2009 Prius makes a noise when it shifts into gear. Is this normal?

Default my 2009 Prius makes a noise when it shifts into gear. Is this normal?
When putting car in gear in makes a slight grinding noise. |I am not sure if it is supposed to slip into gear quietly or if it need lubrication. |I don't drive it often so I don't know if it always did the sound or if it is an indication that something is wrong.

no, that's not normal. You need to take it to the dealership. Don't take it to a private mech, they don't know what they're doing. Dealerships usually give you free estimates too. Mech charge you for estimates.































Prius' have a CVT transmission, so there are no "gears". It's basically a pulley system.

It's a 2009 so Toyota should still have a bumper to bumper warranty covering it. As long as it's not a defect due to abuse Toyota should fix it for free, and this doesn't sound like it's from abuse or neglect.

There are no pulleys in the Prius system, nor does it ever change gears. However, there shouldn't be any grinding noise either so you should take it to a dealer to have it inspected.































It's possible that the grinding noise the from the brakes due to non-use. It's hard to diagnose noises over the internet.

take it back where you bought it and tell them what is happening. The transmission is very pricey on a Prius so you want this fixed right away. It should be covered by your warranty. And keep track of how many times it takes for them to get it right. Research into what rights the Lemon Law gives you.
