How can i tell if my parents 2004 (i think) Toyota Rav4 is FWD or AWD?

its the 04 im 90% sure, the one witrh the bonnet scoop and it says Sport on the back in red writing i dont know much bout it, its auto. how do i kno if its front or all wheel drive? and is there a way to turn off traction control if it has it which i think it might? thanks

rav4 is always 4wd you can not turn it off,its permanent.

Easy. Look at the rear axle. If it's just a thin bar running across from the left rear wheel to the right rear wheel, then it's FWD;if there's a mechanism in the middle where the axle goes then that's a differential and you have AWD. If this sounds confusing, just look for adriveshaft running from the front of the vehicle to the rear wheels underneath the vehicle. It will run down the middle of the bottom of the RAV(not the exhaust pipe). If yours has that shaft, then it's AWD; If not, it's FWD. That last answer either doesn't understand the question or has never seen a FWD RAV4 before.

If it's AWD it will have an AWD badge on the rear door. If it's only 2WD (front wheel drive), you have no badge. Sport is just an edition, it still can be 2WD or 4WD. You can't turn the traction control off I don't think. And no, it's not full time AWD (even if it has the badge) Here's how it works: Under normal conditions the front axle gets 100% of the torque, meaning you driving in 2WD. During traction loss at the driven axle a fully automatic system makes up to 50% of the torque to the axle with traction available. Once the primary driven axle regain traction and both axles rotate at the same speed, the system reverts back to 2WD. So only for a moment you had AWD.
