it could quite possibly be that the gas cap is either not on or not on tight. on the newer vehicles, 95 and up, this WILL turn on the check engine light. try that first, and if that doesnt work, have the computer scanned by a mechanic. if they charge you, it wont be much. all they do is hook up a software scanner that will tell them a code. depending on what the code says, that gives you a good direction to look in so that you aren't totally blind when it comes to whats wrong. if its something that is wrong that you feel comfortable doing, do it and the light will eventually turn off or on toyotas you can disconnect the battery and connect it again to clear the check engine light. if it isnt something that you feel comfortable fixing, tell the mechanic what code the scanner came up with and that will help in determining what is wrong with the vehicle. hope this helps!
