Default Can anyone explain to me what was mechaniclly wrong with the Toyota gas pedal?

As you have heard, Toyota stopped selling five of their models, mostly high selling ones. They will implement alteration to their gas pedals which was triggered by a fatal accident in California. Each alternation will take about two hours and there will be millions that will have it done. Nice stimulus package from Japan. One thing I admire about the Japanese management style. They take immediate and full responsibility for their mistakes and will do anything to rectify the situation. If this had occurred involving any of our car manufacturers, all you are going to hear will be a series of denials and excuses and will go all out spending millions to deny responsibility in court.

Ugh! Toyota keeps dissapointing me! In 2007 they had the crap Tundra issues and now the other models. Toyota should stop making cars. If they can't make anything good don't make anything at all!

Toyota's are inferior cars, they are actually less reliable than GM now.

It is happening because the throttle linkage is electronic. There is no mechanical connection between your gas pedal and the throttle body. This should be illegal, but technology is much more important than safety. There is too much potential for electronic parts to fail.

As far as taking responsibility for their mistakes, not so much. Those pinheads have been busy blaming floor mats and drivers and are just now facing the fact that some electronic piece of crap is defective. How is it only the owners of Toyotas are unable to tell the gas pedal from the brake? I would take that as an insult, myself. Luckily, I don't have a Toyota, so I don't have to worry about it. Until one rear-ends me.

Ever notice how so many Toyota "techs" on Y!A are semi-literate? You have a guy that can't even spell "Corolla" and he makes a living fixing them? Everything about that company is just so wrong. Let it go under.

I would not give Toyota a free ride on this or anything for that matter. They have bluffed the world into thinking they have the best quality.

Toyota has known about this problem for quite some time now. Its all related to their new "Drive By Wire" system they introduced around 2007-2008. They know its gonna cost them millions to repair all of these vehicles properly, so they are trying to blame it on everything from operator error, too big of floor mats or too big of a gas peddle. The problem is all computer/electronic related, as these vehicles do not have a cable running from the gas peddle to the throttle body. Instead when you step on the gas it sends out a signal to the throttle telling it to speed up or slow down.

Another thing, Toyotas prized Hybrid, the Prius-they have had hundreds of complaints, mostly related to electrical and battery issues with this car. Consumer reports has a whole section set aside on their website with hundreds of complaints. Read it here:

THIS WOULD ANSWEWR SOME OF YOUR QUESTIONS..I HOPE.

CTS Comments on Toyota?s January 21 Safety Voluntary Recall

Elkhart, IN?CTS Corporation (NYSE: CTS) today provided comments on Toyota?s recent accelerator pedal recall. As previously announced by Toyota, the January 21 voluntary recall results from what Toyota described as ?a rare set of conditions which may cause the accelerator pedal to become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.? Toyota said this condition ?is rare and occurs gradually over a period of time.?

As has been publically stated by Toyota, we have no knowledge of any accidents or injuries that have resulted from this rare potential condition. Based on information that Toyota has provided us, we are aware of fewer than a dozen instances where this condition has occurred, and in no instance did the accelerator actually become stuck in a partially depressed condition.

As Toyota stated, this recall is different from and unrelated to the ?sudden, unintended acceleration issue? which was the subject of the November 2009 Toyota recall. In the November recall, the pedals in Toyota models dated back to model year 2002. CTS became a pedal supplier in 2005. Accordingly, our products are not implicated by the November 2009 recall. The products we supply to Toyota, including the pedals covered by the recent recall, have been manufactured to Toyota?s design specifications.

Toyota is a small, but important, customer of CTS, representing approximately 3% of our annual sales. CTS has been actively working with Toyota for awhile to develop a new pedal to meet tougher specifications from Toyota. The newly designed pedal is now tested and parts are beginning to ship to some Toyota factories.

About CTS

CTS is a leading designer and manufacturer of electronic components and sensors and a provider of electronics manufacturing services (EMS) to OEMs in the automotive, communications, medical, defense and aerospace, industrial and computer markets.
