1997 Toyota Corolla cylinder bearing break. Easier fix?
I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla I lent to a cousin of mine. He drove it around so much that when I got it back, the car was rattling. I ran a few errands and bought new oil and an oil filter to replace the next day, but before the day was out, one of my cylinder bearings broke.
From what I understand, on most cars, that means cherry-picking the motor, removing the head and a ton of other components, and trying to diagnose the issue and determine if it's even cost effective to replace.
On the V4 stock motor, is there an easier way? Someone told me removing the oil pan might allow easier access, but they followed with "it's only some cars".
Lastly, are there any resources I should be looking at to buy parts for cheap? I ask because I'm an unemployed, poor college student living off a minimum wage job. I can only afford to spend $400~$500 on the repairs, and my cousin's poorer than I am... there's no way he could flip the repairs.
