2004 Toyota 4 Runner Brakes?

I have 36,000 miles and recently it snowed here. I put the car onto 4X4 and was driving. The road was snowy. I pushed the brakes all the way and they applied and slowed down the car but the car would not stop. From the wheels came a crackling noise. When I drive on the road with out snow the brakes apply fine.

its probably because you where sliding?

likely a combination of slippery roads, anti lock brakes if it is fine on bare rds practice driving on snowy rds to learn how a 4X4 feels( they r very different fron 4X2)

It was the ABS system. When you hear that noise and the brake pedal travels farther than normal make sure you do not pump the brakes. Hold constant pressure on them and the car will stop as soon as it can without losing control. You must leave yourself extra stopping distance on slippery roads and you are lucky there was no one in front of you because you probably would have hit them. As the other answerer said, you should go out and practice driving on slippery roads with no traffic on them so that you can get use to the braking system. Once you know how it works it can be very helpful in avoiding accidents.Hope I have been helpful.
