Most 1999 Toyotas have suffered with the deadly SLUDGE issue which destroys the engine completely and unexpectedly. It involves literally tens of thousands of cars, but I don't believe Toyota ever acknowledged it. I have a 99 Camry and use ONLY synthetic oil so the engine does not develop sludge. They do this because Toyota tampered with, and narrowed, the engine exhaust ports which let the burnt fuel out of the engine, trapping it there inside the engine, and coating the engine with thick non removable sludge, until the engine suddenly, and with out warning, locks up where ever you are driving. So if its a 99 Toyota you can't tell if it will last. And of course if it were a new Toyota, it would already be classified as junk.
