It's probably just the seal. Reasonably easy to replace, buy a Haynes manual and it will walk you step by step through it.
Did you drive it with the hubs locked AFTER you drained the differential? Pull the cover and see if there is any chunks of gear or a lot of metal shavings in there, jack it up, put it on jack stands, and see if the wheels turning are moving the diff gears (hubs locked). If it all looks good and no shavings or chunks, no harm done.
