Toyota's quality had dropped markedly during the past five or six years. The recent spate of recalls is a reflection of that. Also, Toyota has not been forthright about known defects, and was basically forced by government pressure, lawsuits and consumer complaints into finally acknowledging the problems and doing something about it. So it makes no sense to buy or lease one now, especially since you pay so much more for Toyotas than comparable models from other brands. In addition, the resale value of Toyotas is dropping, and is likely to get much worse as demand and confidence plummets.
