The smaller the engine, the better the gas mileage, the easier the engine to maintain.
Thats the benefit of a small engine, 1.0, 1.2 & 1.3L
1.5 & 2.0L will give you all those but a little more power.
The problem with small engine is that they have no power, acceleration is horrible, when you drive at 50MPH (80KM) They would rev high for more power. Meaning that you would waste more on gas + it would be too loud. (Others Toyota owner report)
If I were you, I should stick with 1.5L, thats a better engine option for both fuel economy and power. It should easily top 38 MPG or better depending upon driving conditions.
You can have a 1.0 engine with MORE on fuel economy but the power will eventually become a problem.
