P0420 means "Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)". Basically, your catalytic converter is not working properly.
The bank 1 refers to the side of the engine that contains cylinder 1 (in the case of a V6 or V8). If your engine is just a normal in-line engine, this part does not matter as this is the only bank.
It is worth checking the condition of your lambda/hego/oxygen sensors and wiring, as this may on rare occasions trigger this code.
Don't go for the cheapest cat you can find, as they are generally not of good quality (made with less of the expensive metals inside the CAT) and will often trigger the same code after a few weeks/months. CATs going into cars built after 2001 have to be type approved. If you can afford it, a genuine cat will be best, and should come with a warranty of at least a year.
