You should use overdrive for normal driving conditions. This allows the engine to coast, instead of downshifting with decreasing speed.

I own a Toyota Camry. In the driving manual it states that the OverDrive function should be used for highway driving or when the car will be over the speed of 80kph for long distances.

Agreed, you should almost always drive with overdrive engaged. Simply put it is another gear in your transmission to save on gas and has less wear and tear on your engine. The only time you should turn it off is when you need additional power for towing or hill climbing. Good Luck with your car!!!
