It is a myth that Toyota has had the fewest recalls. Even with Toyota's failure to disclose and act upon reports of a design flaw implicated in loss of control 'incidents', by a wide margin Toyota still leads recalls in recent years, before the current torrent.
From 2004 to 2007, Toyota recalled a massive 9.3 million vehicles - a number exceeding its total annual output, and up from 2.5 million recalls in the three years previous to 2004. Toyota's rate of recalls as a percentage of vehicles on the road hit 10.1%, compared to only 6.8% for GM and a minuscule 2.5% at Chrysler Group. So if you add its current 8.5 million (and ever-growing) recalls, Toyota is truly the unchallenged recall king.
The myth of low Toyota recalls flies in the face of fact, and appears to be perpetuated by Toyota apologists and employees.
