Oil leak between the head and the block on a 22re??

A buddy of mine had a Toyota with what we thought was a leaking main seal. But when he took it to a tire store mechanic they told him he had a blown head gasket. I haven't ever heard of a head gasket leaking like that. The coolant and oil is not mixing at all either. The engine has 40,000 miles on it with no head work at all.

Is that even possible?

If so, has it happen to you?

Just look at where the oil come out. Blown head gasket will have oil in the water and temp would go up. I would either though the valve cover gasket or main seal.

There has to be an oil pressure drilling going to the overhead valves. also drain back passages to the pan. any of these can leak to the exterior if the seals are bad.

i am not sure i would trust a "tire store mechanic" to diagnose the leak. Many of them are notoriously under-qualified. They are also trying to sell the biggest repair job they can. It could just be the cylinder head cover gasket too. 22re's are known to be very reliable - it seems a head gasket problem is unlikely.

Yet another Toyota defect was announced today, this time a million vehicles with defective oil hoses. Toyota has offered to replace the hose within the next three years, but has not issued a recall, for some strange reason, even though the leak could cause engine damage.

It is most likely the VVTi line. This is not a recall but a "Technical bulletin" for Toyota. They are fixing the problems as the come in. It has not become a recall because it is not a matter of safety at this point. Take it to the dealer. It doesn't take long to replace but the dealer should do it under warranty, unless its only covered to 36000 miles, in that case you may have to pay for parts and labor, maybe 300? I would have a technician do this because it is sometimes required that you remove the power steering pump which is alot easier to do if you have a lift.
