Probably MOST parts will interchange. those 2 years are the same series and platform. Toyota does major changes every 5 years on trucks and 4 Runners. 1996 was first year of cycle.
Some parts MAY be changed on a model year basis - particularly engine/emission control parts and control modules. there may be associated changes to sensors and wiring harnesses - so beware of anything electrical. Also be aware that there were some peculiarities in suspensions - springs and shocks/ stabilizer bars - that were unique to what size tire the vehicle was originally sold with. Most likely parts catalogs will show updated and superseded parts in that area.
