Hi dears, i have got a toyota 4runner, with an automatic transmission, beside the handle of the gear, there is a button, when u press, it shows O/D off on screen, any idea what is this button used for? thanking you in advance
It's an overdrive gear. Drive it on the highway with it off. While cruising, hit the button to turn it on and the truck will shift to another gear(4th). Saving you gas and wear on the motor.
when you push the button - and the "O/D off" (O/D = overdrive) light is lit - you have locked out your highest gear.
i think the default position everytime you start the truck will be O/D on (normal driving) and the light will be off or if it is an older truck the button may latch in position and stay there. In slow traffic - say up to 40 - turn O/D off. Or descending long downhill - turn O/D off to get some engine braking and save brakes. Also if you tow a trailer - may be good to shift O/D off because otherwise it may keep shifting back and forth causing wear on trans.
